New Pumper !

Here she is......little miss pumper!

Can you believe I have not given her a shot in 24 hours?! Oh, she's still getting Insulin, only now it's through this little pink device.

The RN/CDE(certified diabetes educator) came to the house at 11 am Monday. She left at 3:30 pm. We went over everything that we needed to know about the functions of the insulin pump and the Dr.'s orders for dosage and James and I even put an infusion set into our bellies so that we would know what it felt like for Jessi. We still have them in and plan to take it out when she has to. It's the closest we're gonna get to understanding what she goes through. Sigh.

She's doing pretty good. Aside from a little complaing last night about how she'd rather be free and not like a lion in a cage, the hardest part right now is figuring out how to go to the bathroom without having it pull on her skin too much. Bedtime was a bit difficult as she couldn't clip the pump to her underwear without sagging them. So I sissy rigged a t-shirt and sewed on a belt loop to the front of it and she clipped it there. It's actually quite trailer park of us! We need to order some sort of pocket T that they sell specifically for pumps or when my mother-in-law comes home from Ohio next week, have her sew pockets on to some clothes that would help with the sleeping. As for daytime, ordering a pump case is looking like a good idea. Her pump can clip onto her skirts no problem, but the tubing needs to be tucked away somewhere and I'm concerned about it kinking when we shove it in her pocket.

Other than those relatively minor things, it's so far so good. Nightime ran a little high..379..but I entered a correction while she was sleeping and she woke up 242. Not bad considering that was her first night.

Ann, the RN, said we'd probably get frustrated and we have a learning curve for the next 4-6 weeks, but I'm praying for ease and comfort for Jessi and us. I certainly hope it's smooth sailing like this because I could handle this!

I have to check in with the Endocrinologist every day for the first week or so to make fine tuning adjustments. No problem. He's got things going well right now and for being apprehensive about him being our new Dr., he's doing really well with us! Either he rocks or I do...so I choose both!

I know after awhile Jes will get used to it, but that "I want to be free" comment really bugged me. But no shots and more freedom to go over to a friends house might win her over eventually. It's new to all of us as well so of course there's going to be adjustment. But she compared herself to a lion in a cage.........how appropriate. Fiesty and terrifying. Yep, that's her even without a pump!
