So yesterday I vented...either that or.....
Diabetes has NOT been playing nice lately. It's been bullying Jessi since Friday. It's not allowed to come over anymore. I'm telling it's parents that it should be grounded for bad behavior. I'm even unfriending it on Facebook. If I could pull it out of her and choke the islet killing crap of it...I would!
Diet isn't the greatest...I'll admit that. But knowing how to dose for the food she eats becomes routine, right? WRONG!
No changes in food, no new foods, no surprises.....except numbers.

So that's it in a nutshell. I know her diet needs work. I know I checked too much. But why oh why are these numbers so out of whack when it's business as usual?
Well, Doctor called while I was typing this post. His changes....
60-75 carbs per meal max
Ratios: Bfast 1:10
Lunch 1:15
Dinner 1:10
Lantus 17....night before soccer games 14
Daytime Corrections: 151-225 1 unit
226-300 2 unit
301-375 3 unit
376-450 4 unit
Nighttime Corrections: 250-300 1/2 unit
301-350 1 unit
351-400 1 & 1/2 unit
400 and up 2 unit
not to exceed 2 units total while sleeping.
Wants numbers again this Friday @ 4 p.m.. He thinks it's just a matter of her needing more insulin. We'll see.
Ok, so you'd think after 9 years I'd have a handle.........things I should know........SWAG's that should be spot on.......maybe I'm complacent.........I know I am........my poor baby's body.......that's why I hate diabetes. But it's going to alright, I know this. Thanks for actually getting this far with me!

Don't beat yourself up! You're doing the best that you can.
I have to keep my son's carb load to 30g per meal because he's honeymooning. Let me share what works for us. Maybe it could be of help?
I've learned to stick with more low glycemic foods and drinks to help with spikes. OJ is a big culprit! Maybe try strawberries or sliced apple instead. There are a lot of books in a series called The Glycemic Index Diet that can be very helpful.
I also just purchased The Glucose Revoltion Pocket Guide to Childhood Diabetes. It's out of print, but you can order it used on Amazon. I paid .99 cents for mine. It covers how different carbs. affect blood glucose levels, helpful menu planning per age group, sick days, and even touches on a low G-I diet with insulin pumps.
Again, everyone's situation is different. I just wanted to share what works for us.
Is it possible you have a bad vial of insulin? We had trouble with son for a while, and as soon as we used a new vial, he was fine. ? Otherwise, it's just D - it doesn't have to make sense, and that is one of the most frustrating parts of it.
I wanna reach through this screen and (((HUG))) you. I hate, hate, hate highs. They are frustrating...especially when nothing makes sense with them.
The bad batch of insulin makes sense perhaps? Or just "D" being "D".
Chin up.
Ugh!!! We were just in the same friggin situation. I couldn't even think to do anything about it anymore!! One little call to the endo and some VERY LARGE injections later and we are doing good! That first large shot is scary!!! And hormones!! YIKES!!
Keep working it. I kinda agree with Nikki, nix the OJ and see what happens!! I did just find that book on ebay. Hope it comes before we go to Florida. Plane reading!!
Keep us updated! ((Hugs))
Hope those new adjustments work out well! D is always changing the rules on us...it takes a lot of tracking to try and figure it out, and even then it's a mystery.
Puberty, fighting off an illness... don't know the reason. I don't think it's the food, particularly if you have already mastered her diet and don't usually have these problems. For whatever reason, it's the basal... she keeps going high. For pubertal highs, we have adjusted ICR, basals, sensitivity... everything. Pumps allow temp basals which are helpful in these instances. But I would increase the Lantus and decrease ICR, as the endo has done. This will end; it is temporary. Don't worry.
Nikki....I 86'd the oj this morning, haven't had lunch yet at school, so we'll see. I'll have to look into Glycemic Index Diet books...don't really know much about it, (sadly)
Tammy...changed both insulins, could be what Reyna said, bad batch. but it was working fine before all this.
Reyna....my chin is up, but it's bruised!
Andrea...I remember you telling me about the highs, they totally suck! Glad Cale's doing better, at least someone is at this point. That 7 unit shot WAS scary...but didn't even dent!
Valerie...thanks!
Anonymous....The diet does need work, it's so high carb! Not looking forward to pubertal highs!
I have nothing insightful...because I feel like the highs are throwing me around over here like a rag doll.
Just lots of HUGS and PRAYERS.
I notice with my hubby that sometimes his numbers are crazy out of the blue and they just need to adjust a few things. It's all about the unforeseen when it comes to being diabetic. Always changing. :)
